Dr. Cheri Watkins joined Clay Rhynes Eye Clinic in June of 2019. Prior to her work in Durant she practiced in the Tulsa area for 17 years. She graduated with honors from Northeastern State University College of Optometry in May 2002. In addition to her doctorate degree, Dr. Watkins earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology in 1998, and a Bachelor of Vision Science in 2000. While in college she was a member of the NSU Honor Society and the Tri Beta Biological Honor Society. In addition to her training at university clinics and W.W. Hastings Hospital in Tahlequah, she completed her externship at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Muskogee. She received many awards including: the Alcon Award for Clinical Excellence, the Pheiffer Award for Excellence in Ocular Pathology Research, and the Alcon Scholarship Award. Dr. Watkins is a member of Beta Sigma Kappa International Optometric Honor Society, the American Optometric Association, and the Oklahoma Association of Optometric Physicians. Dr. Watkins was among the first group of doctors in the country to become nationally board certified as a Diplomate of the American Board of Optometry in 2011. In addition, she has a therapeutic license and was laser certified in 2001. Dr. Watkins also enjoys mission work and has participated in medical missions to Africa, Mexico, and Guatemala. She and her husband Grant are looking forward to becoming part of the community in Durant, they enjoy spending time with family, traveling, aviation and sports.
